The Anatomy of a Lab Report
Most lab reports share a common structure:
- Test name — What was measured (e.g., "Glucose," "TSH," "Ferritin")
- Your result — The actual number from your blood sample
- Units — How the result is expressed (mg/dL, ng/mL, mIU/L, etc.)
- Reference range — The "normal" range for that test
- Flag — H (high) or L (low) if your result falls outside the reference range

The Most Common Panels Explained
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The CBC measures the cellular components of your blood. Key values to understand:
- Hemoglobin (Hgb) — Oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. Low hemoglobin = anemia. Normal for women: 12.0–16.0 g/dL.
- MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume) — Size of your red blood cells. Low MCV suggests iron deficiency; high MCV suggests B12 or folate deficiency.
- WBC (White Blood Cell Count) — Immune cells. Elevated can indicate infection or inflammation; low can indicate immune suppression.

Flags to Never Ignore
While many flagged results are minor, some warrant prompt follow-up:
- Any result flagged as critically high or low (your lab will usually call you directly)
- eGFR below 60 (kidney function concern)
- TSH above 4.5 or below 0.4 (thyroid dysfunction)
- Fasting glucose above 100 mg/dL (pre-diabetes range)
- Hemoglobin below 11 g/dL (significant anemia)
- ALT or AST more than 3x the upper limit of normal (liver stress)
Questions to Ask at Your Next Appointment
